Can You Drive An American-Style Motorhome In Great Britain?

The types of campervans and motorhome conversions available in the UK are different from the ones you can find in other countries with a camping tradition, but by far the starkest contrast is found between the compact campervans in the UK and the gigantic RVs in the United States.

There is a lot of variation when it comes to campervan designs, but there are people who have enquired about the possibility of driving an American-style recreational vehicle and whether it would be possible.

This is a very good question, given the complexities surrounding American caravans as well as certain “light trucks” that are illegal to drive in the UK such as the Cybertruck. The short answer is that it depends on the truck itself, whether it is approved to be driven on British roads and the license of the person driving it.

Depending on the RV itself, it needs to be registered and approved for use on British roads, which may involve modifications and conversions depending on the make and model itself.

It will likely also need at least a basic individual vehicle approval before it can be used to ensure it meets British safety and legal standards.

At a basic rule, a motorhome cannot be longer than 12m nor wider than 2.55m, and if it weighs more than 3500kg (on a post-1997 category B license) fully laden, the driver needs a category C1 license, and a category C license for any motorhome above 7500kg.

There are some extremely large RVs that do not meet these standards, and many RVs would require what is effectively an HGV license to drive. However, as long as they meet British standards, there is nothing legally stopping someone from driving one on the road.

However, in practice, they are not ideal for British roads in the slightest, which tend to be narrower and more winding than in the United States, and because of this, the overall experience of a British or European campervan is often far more preferred, especially for people

looking for an adventure.
